Minerals & Moods
Many of us have likely heard the terms food mood or hanger. There’s just no faking the funk when your body is running on fumes - and let’s be honest, when our everyday worlds are upside down, sometimes it shows. This isn’t simply about our blood sugar dropping from too long in between meals, this is takes it a notch, or you could say several sediments deeper - into the Earth.
You see, what some of us may not be to keen to is if mood swings steal the stage, it is a cry out for Mother Earth. From a metaphysical stance, our emotional landscape is very fluid, ever-changing (think to how a toddler can express excitement to frustration to hanger all within a few moments). So it makes sense that our physical body is needing grounding nourishment, and what better place than that from Mother Earth’s precious minerals.
There are two classifications of minerals our body needs for function: major minerals and micro minerals, also known as trace minerals. We’ll get into these gems in a moment, yet first let’s dive deeper into why minerals.
Every cell in your body depends on minerals to create the chemical reactions necessary for hormone and neurotransmitter function; such as serotonin for example. Minerals being water soluble however are easily lost or leeched through the body through internal and external stressors such as; exercise, emotions, menstruation, coffee, diarrhea, distilled and reverse osmosis water (even brands like Smart water) and pharmaceutical medications. Couple that with our mineral depleted soil and we’re off to a deficit start.
Minerals are what make up your bodies necessary electrolytes. Electrolytes are essentially your bodies electrical system via the blood that enable nerve & muscle function and are comprised of:
magnesium
potassium
phosphorus
calcium
chloride
Mineral and electrolyte deficiency have been linked to:
anxiety
panic disorders
depression
paranoia
insomnia
Magnesium is most often our first line of mineral defense that hits depletion and it is also the first to recover mineral imbalances with a most severe punch of impact. It is often my initial go to with my clientele of they are showing signs of anxiety, insomnia, muscle fatigue, weakness or inflammation. Of course it is always recommended to speak to your Doctor, Naturopath or Nutritionist before you alter your any intake adjustment.
Here is just a small list of how some of these precious minerals may effect your emotional well-being:
Magnesium - depression, confusion, agitation, anxiety and hallucinations
Calcium - apprehension, irritability, nervousness and numbness
Iron - depression, exhaustion, lack of appetite, listlessness, weakness
Potassium - depression, weakness, fatigue
Zinc - apathy, lethargy, lack of appetite
You can begin to see just how powerful the bedrock of our Earth, forged in heat and friction solidify our wavering moods, by returning us to our body, the slow integrative pace of the nervous system to process.
These are a few of my favorite ways to incorporate minerals with minimal ease:
Trace Minerals Concentrace Drops - I simply add drops to my gallon glass water dispenser!
Himalayan Sea Salt Sole - I leave under the moon and add to my water dispenser as well.
Himalayan Shilajit Resin - pair with nut milk or a ghee golden chai and it’s just divine!
If you’re woo like me, you may even like to add gemstones to your water dispenser. Just be sure if you do they are aluminum-free so as to not leech unwanted metals into your water. And of course as always, consult with your Doctor, Naturopath or Nutritionist before adjusting your consumption intake. If you want to book a thorough Wellness Consultation you can do so here.
